South Carolina Traveler~ Lake Jocassee

The water temperature this week at Lake Jocassee is about 58 degrees.

Trout catches are excellent trolling with Apex lures, Sutton spoons and Yozuri baits from 30 to 60 feet deep. During the daylight hours try drift fishing with large minnows in 45 feet of water. Night fishing for trout has produced excellent catches in depths of 25 to 40 feet. One brown trout recently weighed in at 7-pounds, 8 ounces caught on a minnow in 30 feet of water.

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources is stocking coldwater trout, including brook trout, brown trout and rainbow trout, at Lake Jocassee in the winter and early spring months. Lake Jocassee is managed as a trophy trout fishery. The minimum size limit on Jocassee trout is 15 inches with a five-fish creel limit.

Bass fishing has been good with  slow retrieves with plastic worms  and casting Carolina-rigged worms and spinnerbaits. Smallmouth have been hitting fair drifting live bait or brown hair jigs on rocky points and rocky banks.

The Crappie  fishing is still slow this week, but you can try small minnows and jigs around brush piles.   A recent catch of a 2 pound 12 ounce crappie was reported.

Bream catches are fair using earthworms around banks and brush.

Catfishing  is better this week using nightcrawlers or cut bait on the bottom at night.
