HOME OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S LARGEST LAKES

The 4th of July is almost here! From the shores of Lake Marion, down The Diversion Canal and into Lake Moultrie, known world-wide as Santee Cooper, and surrounded regions; The Blue Ridge and Piedmont, Inner & Outer Coastal Regions, and Coastal Zone Region, South Carolina is an outdoorsman's paradise. Hunting and fishing are a way of life here along the lakes with lots of places to do both. The Santee Cooper Lake System encompass 171,000 acres of fishing and hunting adventures. This incredible lake system is home to some of the countries greatest fishing with 3 world record and 4 state record catches. Famous for Stripped Bass waters also inhabit largemouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bream. Fishing Guides are geared to go. Results are in and the South Carolina Freshwater State Record for white perch has been tied! Due to the extreme size of the catch, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) completed genetic certification that the 1 pound 15.2 ounce white perch caught near the Allison Creek boat ramp on Lake Wylie was not a hybrid of some sort. All freshwater fish records for South Carolina can be found online at: www.dnr.sc.gov/fish/freshrecs/records.html  .

2009 HUNTING, FISHING LICENSES AVAILABLE ONLINE-You may purchase your
license by going to https://ssl.sc.gov/DNRLicensing/EntryPage.aspx . Licenses will be mailed on June 9, 2008 for the new license year.

www.SCFishingReport.com  For an overview of South Carolina trends read the weekly updated fishing report for the location you are interested in at http://www.scfishingreport.com/. Access it by clicking the desired location on the map. Second, for more details check the message board for that location by clicking the "Message Board" link beside the weekly fishing report. Here you can read the most recent updates posted by anglers. Logging in allows you to post questions and respond to topic threads. A new statewide report is available from SCFishingReport.com (as each week), and there are a few quick things I wanted to bring to your attention:

1) H4548, regulating striped bass fishing in the Santee Cooper fishery, is now law in South Carolina.  Among other changes, from June 1 - September 30 harvest of striped bass is now illegal in the system. Read more about the law here.

2) The saltwater message boards on the site have been reorganized and simplified.  Instead of being broken down by species, for each location the boards are now simply divided into "inshore," "beach and pier," and "offshore."

3) Each week the South Carolina Fishing Report tries to provides reports from South Carolina fishing tournaments.  To link to this weeks tournament results click here.

4) Interested in the Chattooga River or fly fishing?  Watch the video documentary posted by a message board member here.

Celebrate the 4th of July with a Discovery Tour of Lake Lure, NC

Waterfall Mountain Properties http://www.waterfallmountainproperties.com  is now offering a luxurious getaway vacation package that celebrates the 4th of July in one of the most beautiful man-made lakes in the world, Lake Lure, N.C. . Your discovery tour includes one night at the exquisite Lake Lure Inn and Spa with a massage, manicure, pedicure, and breakfast and dinner at the Veranda Restaurant. The package also includes a scenic boat ride and guided tour of Blue Herron Point located on Lake Lure in North Carolina.

Blue Heron Point is a new gated community on Lake Lure offering 43 home sites on 55 acres, with mountain, waterfront, and water view properties for sale by Waterfall Mountain Properties, a Division of Harrison Development. The beautiful waterfront and water view home sites start at $325,000 and go up to $3.5 million. Waterfront lots start at $800,000.

Blue Heron Point is within minutes of the historic Lake Lure Inn and Spa. Built in 1927 this Inn has catered to film makers who are drawn to the area for its beautiful scenery. The magnificence of Lake Lure, Chimney Rock, and the 404-foot Hickory Nut Falls, the second tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi River, was captured in the 1992 movie, Last of the Mohicans, with Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe.

Offering a spectacular back drop of deep forest mountains, other movies filmed on location include Kathleen Turner, Rutger Hauer, and Powers Boothe in the1984 film, A Breed Apart, and Firestarter staring Drew Barrymore, David Keith, and George C. Scott. In 1987, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey danced in this ultimate setting, beneath a mountain moon near the blue waters of Lake Lure in Dirty Dancing. In 1996, My Fellow Americans starring Jack Lemon, Jim Garner, Dan Aykroyd, and Lauren Bacall was also filmed here.

Living at Blue Heron Point offers a wide range of activities and outdoor recreation. You can enjoy exhilarating hiking trails and view native wildlife and rare plants. On a clear day overlooking Lake Lure from Chimney Rock you can see 75 miles. Boating, swimming, horseback riding, and panning for gold and precious gems are favorite past times. There are 15 Golf Courses within 20 miles of Lake Lure. An angler's paradise, the lake has 21 miles of shoreline and is approximately 720 acres with depths ranging from 15 to 155 feet. Rainbow and Brown Trout, Small and Largemouth Bass, Crappie, White Bass, Catfish, Bluegill and Sunperch inhabit these waters. The nearby towns of Charlotte, Greenville , Ashville, and Hendersonville offer shopping, dining, quality hospitals and schools.

Blue Heron Point receives wonderful weather due to its unique location at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This region is called the isothermal belt because of its junction at the rolling hills that protects and traps the warmer air. The result is earlier spring flowers, gorgeous fall foliage lasting into late November, and milder winters than other mountain areas. Snowskiing for all ages as is near as 45 minutes.

DNR COURTESY BOATING INSPECTIONS SET DURING JULY 4 WEEKEND- DNR Law
Enforcement Division will again be conducting courtesy safety inspections at some public boat landings in an effort to keep state waterways safe during the upcoming July 4th holiday weekend. As of mid-June this year there have been 13 boating fatalities. This compares to a total of 16 boating fatalities in 2007. DNR boating safety and enforcement officers will perform a quick, but thorough, inspection for items such as required safety equipment and proper boat and motor registration. Those who are not in compliance with safety regulations or registration requirements will not be ticketed during the complimentary inspections. Boaters will be given an opportunity to correct the problem before they launch.

The Great Outdoors Outdoor News Updates for the Outdoor Enthusiast, Conservationist, and Environmentalist.

SC MOUNTAIN LION AN INTERNET HOAX-Most people in this day and age get at least some of their news from the Internet and so it's not a surprise that a sizable portion of the information on the World Wide Web is incorrect. One such story floating around via e-mail is of a wild mountain lion being struck by a car and severely wounded recently near Greenwood in Saluda County. DNR wants the public to be assured this is a hoax.

SNAKES MORE ACTIVE IN WARMER WEATHER-Human encroachment on wildlife habitat is the number one threat to wildlife populations worldwide and snakes are no different. Snakes are most active in the spring and early summer. They are emerging from their wintering burrows (hibernation) and are seeking food and it's also the mating season. Human snake encounters will diminish, as we get later into summer and the weather warms, but they're still present. If a snake enters your home or property and you believe you need professional assistance, you may contact one of the many Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators in South Carolina. These are private contractors who provide a service for a fee. A complete county-by-county list can be found on the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Web site at www.dnr.sc.gov/wildlife/nwco.html

BLUEBIRD BOXES CAN BRING ENJOYMENT TO BIRD LOVERS-    Duncraft - World's Best Bird Feeders (88x31)               Nesting activities begin early for the beautiful and beneficial bluebird, a voracious insect eater that can bring a splash of color and a lyrical song to many homesteads. If you haven't done it already, now is the time to clean, repair or put up new homes for bluebirds, one of our most beloved wildlife species, said Laurel Barnhill, wildlife biologist and statewide  bird conservation coordinator with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR). "Each pair of bluebirds can produce up to two or three broods per year," Barnhill said. "Adults start looking for a nesting cavity in February or early March, so there's no time to waste in getting nest boxes built and in place, or in cleaning out existing boxes." Bluebirds cannot construct their own nesting cavities, as is the practice of woodpeckers. For more information on bluebirds or for nest box plans, write Bluebirds, DNR Wildlife Section, PO Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202 or call (803) 734-3886 in Columbia.

ANGLER TRUMPS NEW STATE RECORD FOR AFRICAN POMPANO-A Mt. Pleasant
angler has broken the saltwater marine game state record for an African pompano a mere 13 days after the 11 year was recently trumped. Bryan Powell caught the 43 pound 8 ounce African pompano on Monday June 16th off the coast of Charleston near the Comanche hole in about 100 feet of water. The new record beat the previous record set a mere 13 days earlier by angler Steve Bagnall of Vancouver WA on June 3rd by five and a half pounds. I don't care who votes for who... but I believe all voters should be fully informed... And my friend sent me this video and it made me very sick to my stomach to even think of what might occur if Obama is elected.

All Obama and non Obama voters should read this... If you care about the future of the United States you will watch the entire 13 minutes of it. It has actual footage of stuff Obama has said... etc.

    June Monthly Car Care Tips

Are We There Yet?
Even with summer on the horizon, Old Man Winter can blow in with a reminder that we're not out of the woods yet. So, if you're caught in one of his early-spring temper tantrums, take heed. Late March snowfall is much wetter and stickier than December flurries. That means conditions deteriorate quickly, turning the road to a slick and slushy mess. Slow down, increase distances and hang tight-summer's almost here!

Light 'em Up
A quick and easy way to make sure all your vehicle's lights are working: After dark, park near a garage door or unlit wall. Check high and low beams, parking lights and signals. You'll see the lights' reflection on the wall. Then, back up and check the rear: tail lights, brakes lights, reverse lights and signals; only this time watch for the reflections in your mirror.
