Fishing
and fun with Youth Bass Fishing Clubs
A recent segment with Carolinas Outdoors
"Catfishing the Carolinas" article series focused primarily on fishing
Santee Cooper in SC. Brad Faircloth was fortunate to have Darryl Smith of
Capt. Darryl Smiths Guide Service send in an article with a few tips and
tricks to help everyone catch a TROPHY CATFISH. Here is a recent catch
(shown left) of a group that fished with Captain Darryl. You can read "How
to Catch a Trophy Catfish" article
here.

A Catch!" with Capt. Darryl and the 96 lbs. catfish.
A draft of the National Fish, Wildlife, and Plant Climate Adaptation
Strategy has been released (www.wildlifeadaptationstrategy.gov)
and public input is requested. A public session is being held in Charleston on
Feb. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Strategy provides a mechanism for working as a unified community with
shared principles and practices to safeguard the nation's key terrestrial,
freshwater and marine ecosystems needed to sustain fish, wildlife and plant
resources against the impacts of climate change.
The session will be held at the Charleston County Library at 68 Calhoun
Street in Charleston. Registration is required to attend. For more information
and to register check:
www.wildlifeadaptationstrategy.gov/public-workshops.php.
The multi-partner strategy was released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with support by the
Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, which the S.C. Department of Natural
Resources is a member, to serve as a valuable tool and blueprint for agencies,
wildlife managers, tribes, and private landowners as they continue to manage
their lands and natural resources in a changing environment.
Think you have what it takes to compete on a national level with
serious anglers? A two brother team from the Barnwell County Career Center
Bass Fishing Club, Cody and Trevor Jeffers, competed in the 2011 High
School Fishing World Finals in Russellville, Arkansas on Lake Dardanelle
last July. The Jeffers brothers were strong competitors for the other 101
teams from 23 different states and eventually came in 7th. T.L. Hanna High
School anglers, Hampton Anderson and Harrison Bramlette, competed at the
High School Fishing Southeast Regional in Alabama this past Sept. and
claimed 5th place.
Form a bass fishing club at your school and you can also compete in
tournaments around South Carolina and potentially reach the national
stage. All you need to do is get a minimum of six students (within the
11-18 year old range) with dues paid and you can have a Youth Bass Fishing
Club. You'll also need an adult at your school to help lead the club,
provide advice and help arrange at least two club tournaments,
fundraisers, speakers and other learning sessions pertaining to fishing
for club meetings. The Youth Bass Fishing Clubs is a product of a
partnership between the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and
The Bass Federation of South Carolina with help and support from parents,
teachers, school districts, local bait & tackle shops, community partners
and Pure Fishing.

Education Coordinator Lorianne Riggin at (803) 737-8483 or

New laws regulate Santee Cooper Arkansas Blue Catfish
Governor Mark Sanford and the General Assembly have approved a new law
limiting the harvest of Arkansas Blue Catfish. The law applies to only the
waters of Lake Marion, the Diversion Canal, the Rediversion Canal above
St. Stephen Dam, and Lake Moultrie.
The law limits the catch of Arkansas Blue Catfish to one fish 36 inches
and larger per person per day, regardless of harvest method. This
includes bow fishing and applies to both recreational and commercial
anglers. The new law was instituted to address catfish anglers’ perception
of fewer large blue catfish as the popularity of these large fish has
grown over the past decade. The law is expected to shift more of the
harvest of large blue catfish to recreational rod and reel anglers, whose
tourism dollars add considerably more to the local economy than do other
harvest methods.
There continues to be no harvest restrictions on blue catfish less than 36
inches and anglers are encouraged to harvest as many as they can
reasonably use.
The law will be considered for renewal in 2010.
REWARD OFFERED FOR SANTEE-COOPER STRIPED BASS TRANSMITTER- A new study will monitor the movement of Santee-Cooper striped bass within lakes Marion and Moultrie and upper Santee, Wateree, Congaree, lower Saluda and lower Broad rivers. Fish will be tagged with internal transmitters as well as yellow external tags for angler identification. A $50 reward is offered for returned transmitters. Anglers are asked to return both the external tag and the internal transmitter. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) needs to retain the transmitters from each fish, so anglers are asked not to just clip off the yellow external tag. Anglers are also asked to record the total length and weight of each fish if possible and where the fish was caught. Anglers should call (toll-free) 1-888-TAGS-4-SC to report tagged fish and to receive their reward. Contact DNR fisheries coordinator Wade Bales at (803) 734-3932 in Columbia for more information.

JOCASSEE GORGES ANGLER ACCESS AREA NOW FEATURES BARRIER-FREE FISHING-The new and improved Dug Mountain Angler Access Area, a popular fishing spot within Jocassee Gorges in northern Pickens County, was the site of a celebration May 22. Duke Energy, Trout Unlimited and the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) cooperated on the special project to improve access and site conditions. A barrier-free fishing structure was created over the edge of the river that affords physically challenged anglers the opportunity to fish for trout near the landmark known as the "High Bridge," which spans the Eastatoee River. A ribbon cutting was held May 22 at Dug Mountain to celebrate improvements to the site. Public parking and access to the river and foot trail were also improved at the popular site, which is used heavily by Upstate trout anglers. Rainbow, brown and brook trout are stocked at the site each year by DNR, and it is a favorite fishing destination for families in the Upstate. Dug Mountain Angler Access Area is about 1 mile down Roy F. Jones Highway off SC Highway 11.
HARTWELL/RUSSELLL SHORELINE PROJECT NEEDS VOLUNTEERS- The S.C. Department of Natural Resources and its partner organizations were recently awarded a $34,476 grant to enhance fish habitat on two Savannah River reservoirs. The Bass Anglers Sportsman's Society and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant supports efforts to establish shoreline vegetation on Lakes Hartwell and Russell to improve fish habitat. Grant partners include Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia and South Carolina Bass Anglers Sportsman's Society (B.A.S.S.) Federations, Lake Hartwell Association, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Call Gene Hayes with the S.C. Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) at (864) 223-1307, Larry Dyck with Lake Hartwell Association at (864) 885-7026 or Jamie Sykes with Corps of Engineers at 1-800-944-7207, extension 3425, for more information on the project or how you can volunteer.
