Cabela's King Kat Tournament Results

Marion Moultrie-The Santee Cooper Lakes

Saturday, July 17th, anglers merged to South Carolina's Marion & Moultrie, The Santee Cooper Lakes for the Cabela's King Kat Tournament Trail qualifying event. Marion and Moultrie are well known as one of the top fisheries in the nation and for its excellent catfishing. Fishing was a little tough with daytime temperatures in the 90's making it a real challenge for these fine anglers.

These anglers were competing not only for cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2004 Cabela's King Kat Classic to be held on the Mississippi River at Ft. Madison, Iowa in September.

Taking first place was the team of Glenn Hood of Bonneau, SC and Josh Coggins of Lando, SC with a total weight of 76.05 pounds. Bonneau and Coggins were using mullet and herring fishing on drops and ledges in the lake. The team received $950.00 for first place in the event and will advance to the Cabela's King Kat Classic in September. The top 20 teams at each of the event advance to the classic in September.

In second place was the team of Gary Williams and Cecil Phillips along with young Sam Williams all of Carthage, NC with a total weight of 47.35 pounds and taking home $610.00. The team was using herring, drifting through different areas of the lake to catch their fish. For those who are unaware in a Cabelas King Kat event a third person may accompany the team provided the third person is under 16 or over 65 years of age. A six pole limit still applies even with a third person in the boat.

Third place in the event went to the team of Jimmy Blankenship of Mebans, NC and Britt Riley of Burlington, NC with a weight of 38.45 pounds for their one single fish. The team also captured by fish of the event and received a Minn Kota AP 65 Trolling Motor. The team was using herring to catch their single fish.

Rounding out the top 5 teams in the event was Gary Case of Pendleton, SC and Ronnie Stancil taking fourth place with 28.7 pounds. Fifth place went to Doug Bell and Alan Denner of Gastonia, NC with a weight of 24.65 pounds.

Tournament Director Richard Williams and all of us at Cabela's King Kat wish to thank the folks at Rocks Pond Campground and Marina, the official weigh in site for all their help in the event.
